Which Tool is Right for You, a 1st or 2nd Fix Nail Gun?

Of course, it all depends on the situation at hand, which is why we’re going to explore 1st & 2nd fix nail guns in greater depth for your convenience.
First fix nail guns
When deciding on which nail gun is best for you, you have to start with the type of job that you’re undertaking. This is because the type of job will determine what sort of nailer is required. In this case, we’re looking at “first fix” nail guns (otherwise known as “framing nailers”).
What is the main function of a first fix nailer?
A first fix nailer is generally used to complete rough woodwork, such as wood framing, roofing & flooring. The term “first fix” is applied, as these nailers are intended for use in areas that aren’t going to be exposed upon completion of the project, as larger nails that leave impressions on the wood are used. They’re designed for structural rigidity as opposed to discretion.
Second fix nail guns
A second fix nail gun (or “finish nail gun”) are used when it comes to the “softer” jobs, (i.e., the later, aesthetic fixtures). The nails used for these guns are much smaller so that they don’t leave large, visible impressions on the work area. These are much better suited to the more “delicate” interior work where a clean finish is required. Perfect for door frames, household mouldings and any other discreet finish.
In addition to that, when selecting 2nd fix nail guns, you can choose from straight and angled options. The difference between the two is self-explanatory, though most people favour angled as they can be used in difficult “hard to reach” places. All in all, they’re very flexible tools.
How do I know which to choose from?
When deciding on whether you need a first fix or second fix nail gun, it really does come down to the type of projects that you’ll be working on. If you’re doing a few odd jobs around the home, then the likelihood is that you won’t need anything bigger than a 2nd fix. That said, if you’ve got some big projects in mind, then you may need to go for both. In fact, for most tradesmen, it is common to have both a 1st and 2nd fix in their toolkit.
