About Data
Serving Our Customers for Over Half a Century
Data Powertools was founded in 1969 by Mervyn Dando as a specialist power tool repair business serving customers across South Wales.
In the early days, Mervyn built the business through hard work, personal service, and a commitment to helping local tradespeople keep their tools working. Long before online ordering and national distribution networks existed, he travelled throughout the area collecting and returning customers' tools for repair, building a reputation that helped the business grow year after year.
As customer demand increased, the company expanded from repairs into the supply of professional power tools, machinery, accessories, and workshop equipment. More than 55 years later, those same principles of service, product knowledge, and customer care remain at the heart of the business.
Today, Data Powertools continues to be run by the Dando family, supporting tradespeople, workshops, manufacturers, and serious DIY users across South Wales and throughout the UK. While our roots remain firmly in South Wales, the growth of our ecommerce operation now allows us to supply customers nationwide, combining the personal service of an independent family business with the convenience of online ordering and next day delivery on thousands of products.
Proudly Family-Owned and Independent
Data Powertools remains a family-owned independent business and continues to be run by the second generation of the Dando family.
While many tool retailers have become part of large national groups, corporate organisations, or online-only operations, we have remained focused on the values that helped build the business in the first place. We believe customers should be able to speak to knowledgeable people, receive honest advice, and deal with a company that genuinely cares about the products it supplies and the customers it serves.
For more than 55 years, we have built the business by looking after our customers properly. We take the time to understand their requirements, recommend suitable products, and provide support long after a purchase has been made. That approach has helped us earn the trust of generations of tradespeople, workshops, manufacturers, and businesses throughout South Wales and across the UK.
Being independent allows us to focus on quality, service, and customer support rather than simply chasing volume. It is an approach that has helped establish Data Powertools as one of South Wales's most trusted names in professional tools, machinery, and workshop equipment.
Built on Long-Standing Customer Relationships
Many of our customers have worked with us for years, and some have been visiting our stores for decades. Over that time, relationships have been built that go far beyond simply buying tools and equipment.
As a family business, we have always believed in looking after our customers properly. Whether that meant helping a new business get started, finding the right solution to a problem, sourcing a difficult-to-find product, or providing support when it was needed most, we have always tried to put people first.
The values that helped build Data Powertools in 1969 continue to shape the business today. Mervyn Dando earned a reputation for looking after his customers, often going beyond simply repairing or supplying tools. He understood that behind every purchase was a tradesperson, a family business, or someone trying to earn a living.
That approach helped create relationships that lasted for decades. Many customers who first dealt with the business years ago continued to return, not only because of the products and service they received, but because they trusted the people behind the business. It is a legacy that continues to influence the way Data Powertools operates today.
Built on Repair Expertise
Unlike many tool retailers, Data Powertools began as a repair business before becoming a supplier of professional tools and equipment. That background remains an important part of who we are today.
Our team understands the products we sell because we have spent decades repairing, servicing, and supporting them. We understand the importance of reliability, performance, and long-term value because we see first-hand how tools are used in demanding trade, industrial, manufacturing, and workshop environments.
This experience allows us to offer practical guidance and recommendations based on real product knowledge rather than simply specifications on a page.
Professional Tools Without Compromise
Data Powertools has always focused on supplying products that professional users can depend on. We believe quality equipment delivers better results, greater reliability, and stronger long-term value.
Rather than filling our shelves with low-cost imports and short-term solutions, we focus on trusted brands and proven products used by tradespeople and businesses every day.
Our range extends well beyond power tools and includes hand tools, woodworking machinery, metalworking equipment, workwear, safety products, fixings and fastenings, workshop consumables, and specialist accessories for a wide range of industries and applications.
Many customers choose Data Powertools because they know they can find specialist products that are often difficult to source through general retailers.
Cardiff and Bridgend Stores
Data Powertools operates from two South Wales locations, providing customers with access to experienced staff, specialist product knowledge, and extensive product ranges.
Our Cardiff store on Cowbridge Road West serves as the company's headquarters and features a large showroom displaying power tools, machinery, accessories, workwear, safety equipment, and workshop products from many of the industry's leading manufacturers.
The Bridgend branch further strengthens our ability to support customers throughout South Wales while maintaining the same high standards of service and technical support.
Both locations are recognised as DEWALT Pro Partner stores, making Data Powertools the only retailer in South Wales with two DEWALT Pro Partner locations.
Customers can visit either store to view products, discuss requirements, compare options, and receive practical advice from a team that understands the products and applications involved.
Supporting Customers Across the UK
While our Cardiff and Bridgend stores remain at the heart of the business, Data Powertools has grown into a trusted online supplier serving customers throughout the UK.
Our ecommerce platform provides access to thousands of professional tools, accessories, machinery, workwear, safety products, and workshop essentials, with next day delivery available on many stocked items.
Today, the business is almost evenly split between in-store and online sales. This balance allows us to combine the benefits of a modern nationwide ecommerce operation with the product knowledge, technical support, and customer service that customers have come to expect from a long-established independent retailer.
Whether a customer visits one of our stores in person or places an order online from elsewhere in the UK, the same commitment to quality products, knowledgeable advice, and reliable service remains at the centre of everything we do.
Service Beyond the Sale
A large part of our reputation has been built on the support we provide after a purchase has been made.
Alongside product sales, we offer servicing, warranty support, spare parts assistance, repairs, and product demonstrations. Every power tool purchased through Data Powertools qualifies for a complimentary service check within its first year.
For many customers, knowing there is an experienced team available after the sale is just as important as the product itself. Whether it is identifying a spare part, arranging a repair, or helping with a technical question, we aim to provide the same level of support that customers have relied on for decades.
More than five decades after the business was founded, our focus remains unchanged: supplying quality products, offering honest advice, and delivering the friendly, personal service that customers expect from an independent family business.
